engineered timber

The use of engineered timber

Multi-layer timber sections with opposing grains balance warping and combat twisting. The use of multi-layer timber is long established in Britain for long span timber structures in demanding environments such as swimming pools and bridges. In common use on the continent, but very rare in Britain is its use for conservatories and orangeries. This multi-layer structure is particularly effective in resisting warping and twisting as the opposing grains even out natural moisture movement. It is the twisting of timber during wet weather, more than the swelling itself, which causes windows and doors to stick. The English Glasshouse are the only manufacturer that uses multi-layered hardwood timber sections as standard throughout its range.

Glass specifications

High-performance glass

Our glazing units are almost twice as effective as standard double glazing. Our products are glazed as standard with double-glazed units which also incorporate an enhanced thermally insulating glass to provide an extremely low U-value. We further improve the efficiency of the unit by using low conductivity spacer bars and filling the cavity with argon gas.

Low conductivity 'warm edge' spacer bars help to minimise heat loss and combat condensation levels on the inner pane. The result is a 1.1 W/m2K centre pane U-value. This means an 80% increase in energy savings compared to single glazing and a 45% increase in energy savings compared to ordinary double glazing.

Aluminium roof finish

Aluminium roof finish

Our glazing bars comprise a two-stage aluminium capping, which provides a weather-tight seal while concealing unsightly screw heads. The glass is supported by neoprene gaskets and secured externally with maintenance-free powder-coated capping. Each element of the roof – including rafters, hips and ridge – is finished in this way and can be colour-matched to suit the style of your orangery or conservatory.

We also offer an extensive range of traditional and contemporary cast crestings and finials to complement each of our designs.

Quality joinery

Our glasshouses feature fully weather-proof flush casements to all side walls and our installations are packed with modern technology that dramatically improves performance while retaining a beautifully traditional appearance. Completing the range is a wide choice of window and door furniture and factory finished paint colours, which can be matched to those from your chosen paint supplier.

Unusually for timber, each of our glasshouses is internally beaded for added security and glass is fitted from the room side to deter would-be intruders from gaining entry by removing the glass.

Internally, the roof structure reveals deep timber mouldings and trims, all decorated to include authentic detailing of the period.

Building work

Our design and project offices employ local tradespeople, who are experienced, professional and conscientious. Each of our project managers operates from your local design and project management office, meaning that as well as being close they also have a detailed knowledge of local building methods and are in regular contact with planning and building control officers.

Our team, then, includes highly experienced bricklayers, plasterers, electricians, plumbers and flooring specialists, allowing us to provide a complete design and build service from inception through to those all important finishing touches.
